Tours to Nicaragua

Looking for a way of getting involved in international solidarity?

Providing opportunities for people to gain first hand experience of Nicaragua is central to our work. Since 1984 over 1000 people from England, Scotland and Wales have taken part in brigades, study tours and delegations to exchange experiences and skills and to build mutual solidarity with Nicaraguan organisations committed to social and economic justice. Each trip has a particular focus but as far as possible we tailor the programme to the particular interests of the group. The trips usually last for between 12 days and 3 weeks. No special skills are needed but it is hoped that participants will get involved in solidarity work when they return.

'In Nicaragua I was able to experience what life is like at the other end of the consumer chain, and witness how important it is that we in the North at least pay a fair price for the products we consume. I am more committed than ever to promoting fair trade. I believe it is a real opportunity to challenge the vast inequalities that exist in the world between the rich and the poor.'

Tours for  2012

Celebrate World Environment Day in Nicaragua!
1 – 14 June, 2012

Visit Nicaragua with us and discover just how much this small Central American country is doing to prevent environmental disaster.

The climax of the trip will be participating in a national fair for the earth to celebrate World Environment Day (see photo. Credit: CJA)

“The principle enemy [of the environment] is human beings, not animals, hurricanes, or drought but the environmental repercussions of human actions.” Dr Jaime Incer Barquero, advisor on the environment to the Nicaraguan presidency

This trip to Nicaragua is part of NSC’s work promoting solidarity between UK and Nicaraguan community activists and environmentalists. We also organise speaker tours of the UK, publish information and raise funds for small projects.

Why join us?

* To enjoy the stunning Nicaraguan scenery, unique fauna and flora and the warmth and hospitality of Nicaraguans.

* To exchange ideas and experiences with Nicaraguan community activists and environmentalists and to explore ways of building solidarity links with them

* Because Nicaragua is a great place to learn lessons in combating deforestation, monoculture, pollution, overuse of pesticides and rising food prices - all of which exacerbate high levels of poverty. The Nicaraguan government, NGOs, and social movements are actively promoting community solidarity, increasing food self sufficiency, food production, protecting the environment and  looking for solutions to oil dependency.

What will the programme include?

Week 1: Living in the rural community of Guadalupe Abajo, northern Nicaragua, working with women on backyard organic gardening. This project aims to overcome food shortages, improve nutrition, build self esteem and encourage food self sufficiency.

Week 2: Exploring further afield in Nicaragua ; let us know your particular interests and we will try to organise visits accordingly,  for example to projects relating to recycling, indigenous seed production, organic farming, reforestation, community tourism, Fairtrade coffee, renewable energy and protection of endangered turtles.

The group will also take part in the ‘National Fair for the Earth’ organised by the Young Environmentalist Club (CJA) and other organisations. This coincides with international environment day and is attended annually by tens of thousands of people. The 2010 Fair used the slogan "Water, forests, humanity...solidarity with the planet!" and included debates, films, art, music, dance, theatre and poetry. www.feriadelatierra.org.ni

Our Nicaraguan partner organisations are  the Nicaraguan Community Movement www.mcnicaraguense.org and the Young Environmentalists Movement.

How much will it cost?

Ground and organisational costs £680 includes accommodation, transport, all meals, interpreting/accompaniment in Nicaragua and preparation in the UK. Flights, airport taxes and insurance are additional. It is advisable to book as early as possible.

There will be a minimum of six and a maximum of ten people in the group.

It would be helpful but not essential to speak Spanish but we encourage everyone to learn at least a little before they go.
