Earthquake Appeal - donate now!
NSC News | Monday, 19 May 2014 |
On April 10th Nicaragua was shocked by an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale. Another occurred on the 11th and by the 15th four hundred seismic events had been recorded countrywide. Thousands of people including our representative in Nicaragua started to sleep outside or to leave the affected areas. We want to help.
According to the International Red Cross, by the 19th over 12,000 people had been affected, especially in the Departments of León and Managua. Homes have collapsed, been rendered uninhabitable or badly damaged but fortunately only two deaths have been reported so far, both from heart attacks. What is extremely worrying is the damage to health facilities and this is where you come in.
By a fortunate coincidence a representative of FETSALUD (Nicaragua’s health workers union) has been in the UK on a speaker tour organised by ourselves and West Midlands Unison. We know already that 12 Nicaraguan hospitals, 5 local health centres and 15 health posts have been damaged, and that the Nicaraguan army has set up 3 temporary hospitals in Managua. Camila has been able to tell us more, for example about the work being carried out to prevent disease and how FETSALUD is providing support. “People are very anxious” we have been told, “Many remember the earthquake of 1972 in which thousands of people were killed and how many years it took to rebuild everything”. Another advantage of Camila’s visit is that she has been able to tell us how best to channel the money raised from this appeal.
Please give as generously as you can. You can post a cheque (payable to NSC appeal) to us at NSC, 86 Durham Rd, N7 7DT or donate here.
70% of the funds raised will go to post-earthquake help and 30% to the work NSC in the UK. Thank you in advance.
