No US Interference in the Nicaraguan Elections !
* Letter to the press.
08/11/06
Following the election result we sent a letter to The Guardian as
follows. It was printed though in an edited form. Keep your eyes open for
negative and mis-information in the next few days or weeks.
Dear Editor,
The US advocates free, fair elections and democratic elections.
Nicaraguan
voters have chosen to vote for the Sandinistas despite dire threats from
the US to cut off aid, investment and remittances should they make this
choice. National and international observers - including the
Organisation
of American States of which the US is a member - have declared the
elections
free and fair. Will the US now bury their hypocrisy and respect the
result?

* take part in the
NSCAG Election delegation October
29th – November 8th
On 5 November Nicaraguans will elect a new president and members of the
National Assembly. Four presidential candidates are standing – two Liberal,
two Sandinista. So far, no clear leader has emerged.
Determined to prevent an FSLN victory at all costs, US interference is
likely to intensify in the coming months (see election briefing)
NSCAG is organising a delegation to observe the elections. The delegation’s
presence aims to contribute to ensuring that the election is free and fair
and to provide on the ground reports on the election process and the impact
of US interference.
Delegation participants should have some knowledge of the political
situation in Nicaragua, commit to participating in preparation and,
hopefully, follow-up work in the UK, be able to fund themselves, be flexible
and adaptable and have good communication skills. Spanish would be an added
advantage but is not essential.
Costs:
Flights £655 (Iberia via Madrid and San Jose) Please note that this is the
price as quoted on July 1st and is likely to increase the closer to
departure date you book.
Ground costs/admin £420. This covers NSCAG staff and administrative costs in
the UK and Nicaragua, and all accommodation and transport in Nicaragua
(including all meals).

We would advise early booking to ensure places on flights.
