NSC was founded in 1978 to support the Sandinista Revolution which overthrew the Somoza dictatorship, established democracy, political rights and social and economic justice, and became a beacon of hope in a region devastated by war and dominated by US imperialism. We have adapted our work to the changing context - globally and in Nicaragua - but remain committed to the fundamental values of democracy and justice.
On 25th September 2004 NSC became a charity >>

Past Achievements

"I returned from Nicaragua with a renewed sense of the value of ordinary people in both rich countries and poor countries standing together for social and economic justice." (Member of NSC Study Tour)

  • In the 1980s the NSC helped build a broad cross-party consensus in the UK that condemned US military and economic aggression against Nicaragua and supported the achievements of the Sandinista Revolution.

  • We have acted as a catalyst to the setting up of other organisations such as the Nicaragua Health Fund (later merged with One World Action), Environmental Network for Nicaragua (later the Environmental Network for Central America) the Nicaragua Women’s Network (later the Central America Women’s Network), Coda International and Computeraid International.

  • NSC was one of the first organisations to produce solidarity t-shirts and mugs and sell them world-wide, raising money for information and campaigning work on Nicaragua.

  • Over 1,000 people from Britain have visited Nicaragua on work brigades, study tours and delegations organised by NSC.

  • Strong, lasting ties of friendship and solidarity have grown through speakers and visitors invited from Nicaragua, twinning groups, trade unions, links between women's organisations, environmentalists, universities, health workers, teachers, schools, community groups and links between the FSLN and the Labour Party.
  • NSC has raised over £1 million for medical and educational supplies, trade unions, women's organisations, the Community Movement, human rights groups and groups working on violence against women.

Following Hurricane Mitch in 1998, NSC, twinned towns, trade unions and many individuals raised money for emergency relief and new housing. This is an earthquake-proof house funded by the Oxford-Leon Trust. www.oxfordleon.org

  • NSC continues to send delegations and study tours to Nicaragua linking British organisations with their Nicaraguan counterparts.
